Journal Through the Bible, Week 42 Day 5

II Samuel chapter 7

Does God issue any commands?
  •  God told Nathan the prophet to go to David and to tell him all the words of the vision that God gave him. Nathan did. (Verses 5-17)

Does God make any promises?
  •  God promises an eternal land and eternal peace to His people, Israel, in verse 10.
  •  Through Nathan God states again His promise of an eternal kingdom.
  •  God promised not to turn away from David's dynasty through his son even if the son disobeyed. The promised reign of David's family would not be taken away and given to another as Saul's reign ended. The promise was not dependent upon the goodness of Solomon or future heirs. It was dependent upon the covenant of God who sent His own Son to be born of David's lineage. (Verses 15-16)
  •  God promised that David's son would build the House of God. And Solomon did!

Does this chapter teach anything about Jesus?
  •  Verses 8 and 9 - God has the prophet Nathan speak to David but it is very much a type of Christ: "I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be a ruler over my people, over Israel: And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth." Here we see the progression of the Great Shepherd to the Ruler of all nations and the Warrior who defeats His enemies.
  •  Verse 13 - Jesus is the One who will reign on the throne of David as the inheritor of David's promised eternal dynasty.

Does this chapter teach anything about future events?
  •  Verse 10 - This must be a prophecy that is not yet fulfilled. It not only promises Israel a place of their own where they will never again be moved, but it also promises that the wicked will never afflict them again.
  •  Verses 11-13, God will one day reestablish the rule of David's dynasty with the reign of Jesus Christ.

To Those Using the 2016 Bible Reading Plan

Update: A link for the newest book(s) encountered on the schedule will also be shown on the left sidebar as the "Featured Post."

There is a tab located at the top entitled "Bible Timelines" which contains links to introductions for each book of the Bible. Most links will lead to articles that highlight more than one book. For instance, here is the link for Genesis, John, and Job because that is what we read first in chronological order in the Old and New Testaments each new year. (Click here)

My apologies for not pointing this out sooner for the benefit of new readers.

2016 Bible Reading Schedule Now Available

It's December already folks! That means January and the New Year are right around the corner. Plan now to read the Bible each day in 2016. I've got a plan that I developed several years ago to accommodate my own history-driven learning style. Scriptures are not read sequentially but in a more chronological order. I share this each year for those who might want to read along.

The pdf version of the 2016 is now available for download. Copy it onto legal size paper and then fold it to keep it in your Bible.

(The complete schedule will also appear in the link at the top as we get closer to January. Thanks for reading!)

Permission: As always, you have my permission to copy and distribute the schedule as long as no changes are made. The instructions, credits, and blog information should also remain intact.

Journal Through the Bible: Week 96 Saturday

source
II Chronicles chapter 29

Again, what a breath of fresh air it must have been for Judah to have a Godly man on the throne once more! In the first month of his reign, Hezekiah reopened and repaired the Temple. He also commanded the priests and Levites to consecrate that holy place because he intended to bring the nation into a covenant relationship with God again. Even the old songs of David and Asaph, most likely the psalms, were sung in reverential worship. It was truly a national revival!

Does God issue any commands?

  • God had commanded in the law that the priests and Levites consecrate themselves for His service. At the command of Hezekiah they did so again according to the words of the LORD.

Does God make any promises?

  • The last verse of the chapter says that God had prepared the people for the work that Hezekiah commanded them to do. A promised blessing is always present when God prepares the people for worship! (The promise is that He will be in their midst.)

Does this chapter teach anything about Jesus?

  • The sacrifices that Hezekiah had the priests and Levites restore to the Temple worship are all pictures of the atoning work of Jesus on the cross.

Does this chapter teach anything about yet-future events?

  • This time of God working in the hearts of people, leading to revival and worship, pictures a future time when God will do the same world-wide. This will follow a darker time (the Tribulation) than the reign of Ahaz, but the LORD will work mightily to prepare the people just as He did in the days of Hezekiah.

Journal Through the Bible: Week 96 Friday

source
II Chronicles chapter 28

It is always abominable to read of the children sacrificed in the fire to the idol, Baal. It is abhorrent to read that a descendant of David, and a ruler in Judah, took part in this practice. Evidently Ahaz sacrificed more than one of his children in that manner. His abomination caused God to bring Syria, Israel, Edom, Assyria, and the Philistines against Judah. And just when it seemed that Ahaz couldn't get any worse he took the gods of Syria to be his gods. He made altars to them on every street corner in the capital city of Jerusalem.

Does God issue any commands?

  • God had commanded the Children of Israel not to sacrifice their children to idols. He said through Solomon that children are His heritage and they belong to Him. (See Psalm 127.) Ahaz was a wicked king who disregarded this command.
  • Through the prophet Oded, God commanded the people of Israel to free the people of Judah that they had enslaved in battle.(This had also been forbidden in Leviticus.)

Does God make any promises?

  • God had promised that He would let Judah be defeated by her enemies if she did not follow His commands. God punished Ahaz by delivering the country to Syria and Israel. (Remember that each king was supposed to write out a copy of God's law for his own use. Evidently Ahaz did not do so. That, or he copied the law and blatantly disregarded it. Disgusting either way.)

Does this chapter teach anything about Jesus?

  • In spite of everything, God preserved a Godly son for the Davidic line when Hezekiah followed the rule of his evil father, Ahaz. In spite of everything we have done, God has preserved a Godly son for the Davidic line in Jesus who will follow the evil rule of the prince of this world.

Does this chapter teach anything about yet-future events?

  • In this chapter Jerusalem was the site of false worship on every corner. The coming Jerusalem will be the center of true worship one day when the saints will worship their God everywhere and at all times.

Take Ten to Read Through the Bible in 2015: January 5-10 Schedule

Did you know that if you - an adult - will devote an average of 10 minutes a day, six days a week, to reading the Bible you can read through the Bible in a year? Studying God's Word will take as much time as you can give it. And it never ends!

Printable Bible Reading Schedule for 2015

source
2015. It's coming folks!

Now is the time to make plans to read through the Bible in a year. Next year to be exact.

Once again I am sharing the Bible Reading Schedule that I developed for reading through the Bible in a year by following a semi-chronological format. There is never an assignment on Sunday. That day is reserved for church and for catching up if you fall behind during the week. The schedule has been revised for 2015 and is now ready to print.

Disclaimer and permission: You have my permission to freely make copies and distribute them to others. You may not sell this schedule or in any way make merchandise of it.

The 2015 schedule can be downloaded directly using the link below. If you cannot access it a copy can be sent via email upon request.

Legal size paper is required. It is 2 pages in length and can be printed on one page, front and back, before folding. I keep a schedule in my Bible.
