Okay, so I'm late again. Would you believe that my cute grandchildren, like our youngest granddaughter pictured above, keep me from getting things done on time? It's true, but it's not entirely their fault. Still, when it comes to making excuses I can't imagine a better one.

Memorization Monday: An Online Tool To Help Memorize

(**Edited because parts of words and sentences were somehow deleted!)

I must thank the individual who left a comment several weeks ago telling me about a website designed to aid in scripture memorization. I took his advice and gave it a try. Besides wanting to find something affordable I wanted to know if it worked and was therefore something that I could recommend to my readers.

It is!

As for affordable, how does "free" sound? Yeah, my frugal genes reacted the same way.

As for something that works, well, it is working for me. I have tested the system for a few weeks now and I like it.  Guess that means I recommend it. :)

The Memverse system is an online program that provides practice based upon an algorithm designed to review a verse at an optimal time. It doesn't matter what your age, as long as you can type and spell (which could be a problem for some, I suppose) you can use the system.

One of the things that I like is that the user has control over what verses s/he wants to memorize. No one tells you which verses to memorize.

Another thing that I like is that the user chooses the Bible version. This is important! You should probably memorize verses in the version you read each day. You are reading your Bible each day, aren't you?!

Let me warn you, though, not to add too many verses to your list at one time. When I first picked from a database of familiar verses I overestimated my ability and began with fifteen. Therefore the 2 or 3 that I did not know, and really were the verses I was memorizing, did not repeat often enough to help me achieve mastery. Once I deleted several and got my list down to the recommended 5-10 this complication was resolved. I know, I know! Follow the directions! That's why they're there.

I encourage you to give it a try. Those of you, who along with myself, bridge a time between old-fashioned index cards and advanced technology might be surprised at how efficient mental exercise becomes when the tools and techniques are varied.

After you sign up for at the Memverse website you might want to include some of these in your list of verses to memorize:
  • Colossians 1:16
  • Colossians 1:17
  • Colossians 2:8
  • Colossians 3:1
  • Colossians 3:16
  • Colossians 3:17
  • I Timothy 1:15
  • I Timothy 2:5

"Amazing Bible Memory" Monday

Many of us think it is impossible to memorize long portions of scripture. Here is a link (scroll down when you get to the web page) to someone who has proven otherwise. Meet the Bible memory man, Tom Meyer. And if you are in the Cincinnati area this coming July you might want to meet him in person, too.  He has some  memorization hints at the website, too, that go far beyond my method of using index cards. His ability tends to verify the success of his method.  So go watch, and read, and be inspired. Then get busy memorizing!

Here are some verses from this week's schedule that you might like to commit to memory. And there is one that I forgot to mention last week. (How did that happen?)

  • I Samuel 15:22
  • I Samuel 16:7
  • I Samuel 17:45
  • Romans 10:8-10
  • Romans 10:14
  • Romans 10:17
  • Or perhaps the passage: Romans 10:9-17
  • Romans 11:33
  • Romans 12:1-2
  • Romans 12:10
  • Romans 13:8
And the verse I neglected to list last week:
  • Romans 1:16
Like I said then, maybe it would be a good idea to memorize the whole book of Romans so that you don't miss any good ones.  Tom Meyer might be the inspiration I need to do that. :)

  • Ruth 1:16
  • Ruth 4:14
  • I Samuel 2:1-10 (The psalm of Hannah after taking Samuel to serve the LORD at the tabernacle)

  • I Corinthians 2:9

  • II Corinthians 5:17
  • II Corinthians 7:10
  • II Corinthians 9:6-8
  • II Corinthians 10:3, 4
  • II Corinthians 12:9
  • Romans 2:11-13
  • Romans 3:10-18
  • Romans 3:23
  • Romans 5:1, 2
  • Romans 5:6-8
  • Romans 5:12
  • Romans 5:19
  • Romans 6:12
  • Romans 6:23
  • Romans 7:24-25
  • Romans 8:1
  • Romans 8:15-17
  • Romans 8:28-31
Memorizing the whole book of Romans would be a splendid idea if you have the ability to do so. So much meat to digest that it is hard to pick out a few verses for the list!

The Consolidated "Everything" Post

Getting things posted lately has been a task of mega proportions. Getting ready for a new grandchild, having a new grandchild, helping with the new grandchild's older brother, holding my new grandchild as much as possible, Easter preparations, and waiting while the electric company trapped another squirrel who could turn the gerbil wheel that generates the power to our home all worked against getting this blog updated recently. Okay, I made that last reason up, but it sure seemed to take a long time for them to fix the power outage last week!

Anyway . . . this post covers material that would have appeared last Tuesday (April 3), Saturday (April 7), Monday (April 9), and yesterday so go get a snack and settle into a comfortable chair because this is gonna be a long one.  :)

Memory Verses

I omitted Galatians 2:20 from last week's list so add it as one of the possibilities this week.

Here are a few verses from this week's reading schedule that you might like to memorize:
  • Deuteronomy 10:12
  • Deuteronomy 11:19-21
  • Acts 17:3
  • Acts 17:24-28
  • I Thessalonians 4:13-18
  • I Thessalonians 5:2
  • I Thessalonians 5:1-8
* * * * * *

Timeline

1. We finished reading Numbers and began Deuteronomy last week. This book was written to the younger generation of Israelites as they prepared to take possession of the Promised Land by Moses immediately prior to his death. It was a repetition of the Law, hence the name Deuteronomy, which means "second law" although technically it was not a "second" law but the same that their now-deceased fathers received.

On the timeline of events this book would cover the last month of Moses' life and would have been written in approximately 1400 BC. Most of the Jews at that time were less than 60 years old since anyone over the age of 20 years died in the wilderness after rebelling when the original spies returned with their report. The exceptions were Moses, Joshua, and Caleb but even Moses was about to die at the age of 120 due to his own disobedience. Joshua and Caleb were the only "senior citizens" of the Children of Israel allowed to inherit land in Canaan.

2. In the New Testament we read Paul's epistle to the Galatians following Acts chapter 16 where we were introduced to them during his missionary journey. Paul mentioned in Galatians chapter 1 that he was amazed at how quickly the churches in that region turned from the teaching of grace to that of a perverted gospel.

There are two trains of thought concerning the time that this letter was written. The early theory places the time of writing at about the same time that James wrote his letter to the scattered Jews (c. AD 49) and the later theory places it just a few years afterward (c. AD 55). It is positioned in the schedule according to the early theory.

One of the things that I find interesting about Galatians from a historical perspective is that Paul gave a timeline of his own ministry in chapters 1 and 2 that helps us understand the passing of the years in the book of Acts. He also told of the 430 years between the time that God gave His covenant to Abraham and its fulfilment. We're reading about the fulfilling of that covenant now in our Old Testament assignments.

3. This week we began reading First Thessalonians, which is a letter written by the Apostle Paul, Silas, and Timothy. We read of the missionary journeys to the area in the early part of Acts 17. Not only did Paul and Silas minister in the seaport city of Thessalonica, but Timothy did also (I Thes 3:2). Paul and Silas were run out of town (Acts 17:1-10 and I Thes. 2:12) but they sent Timothy back to establish a church there. The date that has been given for the writing of this epistle is circa AD 51.

I Thessalonians contains some of the most precious scriptures given for understanding the hope that we have of seeing our deceased loved ones again.

But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
I Thessalonians 4:13-18

Hallelujah! Amen!

Memory Monday: Hide The Word in Your Heart!

Here's a great one nestled within the pages of the Old Testament:
  • Deuteronomy 3:24
"O Lord GOD, thou hast begun to shew thy servant thy greatness, and thy mighty hand: for what God is there in heaven or in earth, that can do according to thy works, and according to thy might?"

(It's sad that this one is part of Moses' request to be allowed to go over the Jordan with the Children of Israel, but it is a beautiful verse for any believer to memorize.)

Here's a wonderful passage that every parent should both commit to memory and to action:
  • Deuteronomy 6:4-9
If ever there was a passage that proclaims that we should be teaching our children Biblical precepts and that scripture should be part of our conversation and even evident in our decor it is this one!

And here are a few familiar verses from the scheduled readings in the New Testament this week:
  • Acts 16:31
  • Galatians 5:1
  • Galatians 5:22-23
  • Galatians 6:1-5
  • Galatians 6:7
  • Galatians 6:9
  • Galatians 6:14

Memory Monday: Verses for this Week

I apologize for the lateness of this post. The plan was to resume a normal schedule after our Missouri trip but when we returned home we found that our Internet was down and not able to be repaired for a couple of days.

All of the verses for this week are taken from the epistle of James.
  • James 1:2-12 (any or all of them!)
  • James 1:13-15
  • James 1:17
  • James 1:19
  • James 1:22
  • James 1:26
  • James 1:27
(I suggest memorizing chapter 1 completely, if possible! This might be my next personal assignment.)
  • James 2:17-20
  • James 3:5-6
  • James 3:17-18
  • James 4:7-8
  • James 4:14
  • James 5:13-16
  • James 5:19-20

Memory Monday: Verses from Acts and Numbers

Acts is such an interesting book to read. The sermons preached by Peter and Stephen are especially powerful and quite timely immediately following the crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus. They are quite timely today, too, but I won't ask you to memorize them.  :)

Here are a few verses that you might already know but see if you can take a few of the more familiar ones and connect them with a few unfamiliar ones to make small passages.

  • For instance, you probably already know Acts 1:8 and Acts 1:11. Now see if you can add verses 9 and 10 so that you can say Acts 1:8-11.
  • Acts 2:22-24. This is a great passage to memorize during this Easter season!
  • Acts 3:19
  • Acts 5:29-32
  • Acts 10:34, 35
And here are a few scriptures from the Old Testament:
  • Numbers 13:17-18
  • Numbers 14:8

Memory Monday: More Verses from the Gospel According to Luke

Luke's gospel is so beautiful that I wish I could memorize the whole thing! It is so hard to pick verses and passages to list but I did anyway. Here are just a few:
  • Luke 17:3-4
  • Luke 17: 5-6 (or perhaps it would be appropriate to do 17:3-6)
  • Luke 18:9-14 - the parable of the Pharisee and the Publican
  • Luke 18:16-17
  • Luke 19:10
  • Luke 20:17-18
  • Luke 24:1-9
  • Luke 27:44-48
Do you have any memory verse favorites from the book of Luke that I've neglected to mention? Please share them with me.

Memory Monday: A Few More Memory Verses for March

This week we will continue reading the New Testament book of Luke and will begin reading the Old Testament book of Leviticus. I didn't put any Old Testament scriptures on my list for this week but here are a few from the New Testament. I am going to be working on the four-verse passage.

  • Luke 9:23, or
  • Luke 9:23-26
  • Luke 14:34
  • Luke 15:4, 5
  • Luke 15:21
Remember to review regularly the verses you've memorized so far. I've written mine on index cards and practice them often as I go about my day.

Looking over the schedule for this coming week I see a few passages that can be added to the list of verses that we might want to memorize:
  • Luke 1:26-38
  • Luke 2:1-16
  • Luke 5:31, 32

Memory Monday: This Says It Better Than I Ever Could!

One of my Twitter buddies recently posted a link to an excellent article about the lost art of memorizing scripture (see article here at the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association website). I am directing your attention to it hoping that Rob Morgan's eloquence will convince you of the importance of memorizing scripture if my own feeble attempts have not already done so. He reinforces my belief that it doesn't matter how old you are. You should be memorizing scripture! Please take the time to read it.

Then after reading the article begin a list of verses that you want to memorize. I provide one here each Monday from the Bible schedule to get you started but it is not meant to be exhaustive (meaning "complete," not "exhausting.") These are just my suggestions. Pick one from my list or from your own and start memorizing!

Here's my list this week:

  • Exodus 12:13 ("When I see the blood I will pass over you." Remember that old hymn?)
  • Exodus 14:13, 14
  • Exodus 15:26
  • Exodus 20:1-17 (The Ten Commandments)
  • Mark 8:34-38
  • Mark 9:37
  • Mark 10:14, 15
  • Mark 10:45 (The key verse of the Gospel of Mark)
  • Mark 11:22-26
  • Mark 12:26, 27
  • Mark 12:29-31
  • Mark 13:31-33
  • Mark 14:38

Memory Monday: A Few New Verses

We will add just a couple of new verses to memorize from the reading schedule this week:
  • Matthew 28:18-20 (The Great Commission)
  • Mark 2:17
Have a great week in the Word!
