TAKE TIME: February 4-9 Assignment

Introduction:  This week we are introduced to a fourth person by the name of Elihu who speaks when Job’s three friends have nothing more to say. The young man, Elihu, waited until his elders, Zophar, Bildad, and Eliphaz had finished arguing with Job before making his own statement.

Reading Assignment:

Memory Verse

Prayer Journal (ACTS)

•  Adoration - This week take time each day to praise God for His wisdom.
• Confession - God already knows about each sin but confess any as they come to your mind and ask Him to help you not sin that way again.
• Thanksgiving - Thank God that if you need wisdom all you need to do is ask Him for it (see James 1:5). Did He answer any of your prayer requests this week? Name them by name. Thanks Him also for any prayers that He has answered even if the answer was no because He knows what is best in each situation.
• Supplication - What are your prayer requests this week? List them for future reference so that you can see how God answers.

Search the Scriptures

Look for references for each of the following:

• Promises that God made and to whom He made them. Do they apply to you?
• References that either refer to or infer something about future events.
• What does this passage teach about Jesus?
• Commandments that God made and to whom He made them. Do they apply to you?

Putting the Word into Action

Perhaps you have a decision to make and you do not know how to proceed. Make it one of your prayer requests. After all, you should ask God for His advice before you ever mention it to anyone else. Then you might want to talk to a Godly person who will give you scriptural advice and will pray with you about it. I say “might” because the only Person that you MUST talk to about your decision is God. Anyone else is optional. And if the person you ask tells you something that contradicts the Bible it is not wise advice! God will never lead you to do something that contradicts His Word. NEVER!

Job 25:1-27:23

Ah! Time for Bildad's third speech. Thankfully, it's short (only 6 verses in chapter 25). But within this short chapter there are a few verses that are widely quoted, "How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman?" (verse 4) and "How much less man, that is a worm? and the son of man, which is a worm?" (verse 6). Well, praise the Lord we know the answer to those questions!!!!

Job's response is found in chapters 26 and 27. Chapter 26 is an eloquent description of God's work of creation. It is his admiration of God's creative abilities that make Job reaffirm his faith and his own integrity in chapter 27.

Does God make any promises in this passage? If so do they apply to me?

Job mentions that he will teach his friends the promises that God makes for the wicked (27:11). And then he makes a list.

I don't want to be numbered among the wicked! 

Are there references to Jesus in this passage?

Jesus is how a man can be justified with God. His shed blood is what makes a person clean in the sight of God.

Are there references to future events (in the future for us, that is) in this passage?

If there are, they would be among the terrors awaiting the wicked (end of chapter 27).

Does God make any commands in this passage? If so, to whom? And are they commands that I also must obey?

There are no direct commands in this passage other than to not be wicked!

But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold. Job 23:10

Job 23:1-24:25

Job is the speaker in both chapters. In chapter 23 he voices a complaint about how the righteous are treated. Where is God when we need him? Why won't he listen to reason?

Chapter 24 is a return to the complaint of how the wicked are treated. Why do they seem to get away with evil?

Does God make any promises in this passage? If so do they apply to me?

No, there are no promises except that Job understands that there is a promised reward for those who endure tribulation (23:10 quoted above). This is verified by other scripture (see Rev. 7:14-17; I Cor. 3:11-17)

Are there references to Jesus in this passage?

The first few verses of chapter 23 deal with Job standing before the physically incarnate God in order to state his case. Jesus is God in the flesh.

Are there references to future events (in the future for us, that is) in this passage?

The reference to coming forth as gold (which would mean passing through the refining fire) is a foreshadowing of judgment.

Does God make any commands in this passage? If so, to whom? And are they commands that I also must obey?

There are no direct commands in this passage, but it is clear that each of us must pass through the refining fire and that we should seek to serve God by living a life that is pleasing to Him since we all face judgment!
