Does God issue any commands?
- God told Jonah to go to Ninevah and preach there.
- God told the fish to vomit Jonah out onto the dry land.
Does God make any promises?
- None that I identified.
Does this chapter teach anything about Jesus?
- The God who calmed the sea when the sailors were frightened because there was a terrible storm that kept them from rowing or sailing safely to shore is the same God, Jesus, that calmed the sea when His disciples were frightened because there was a terrible storm that kept them from rowing or sailing safely to the shore. Notice that in each instance someone was asleep in the boat! In this case it was Jonah. On the Sea of Galilee it was Jesus.
- Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. When the rulers and leaders in Jerusalem desired to see a sign from Jesus He said that no sign would be given to that generation except the sign of Jonah. Jesus was in the belly of the earth three days and three nights.
- The prayer that Jonah prayed while in the fish contains phrases reminiscent of the saying of Jesus. The first part sounds like His cry of despair asking why God had forsaken Him. Toward the end comes the hope of the resurrection. Jonah voices his thanksgiving.
Does this chapter teach anything about yet-future events?
- None that I identified.
