Journal Through the Bible: Week 27 Monday

source
Deuteronomy chapter 5

While it is true that God had previously made a covenant with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and even the generation of Hebrews that left Egypt, Moses reminded the generation that had matured in the wilderness that God had appeared to them and had established the same covenant.

Like a parent who only wants the best for a wayward child or a lover who adores someone who does not return the love, God wistfully looks upon the people with sadness and longing in His heart:
O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever! (v. 29)

Does God issue any commands in this chapter?

  • This chapter contains the second giving of the law.
  • After relating the conditions of the covenant and its laws with the people God told them to return to their tents while He spoke with Moses about teaching the people.

Does God make any promises?

  • Within the giving of the law God said that He would visit the iniquity of those that hate Him for three or four generations but that He would show mercy unto thousands that love Him and keep His commandments.
  • Honoring father and mother brought the promise of living long in the land.

Does this chapter teach anything about Jesus?

  • Just as God promised to show mercy to thousands who love Him and keep His commandments Jesus said that those who love Him, Jesus, would keep His commandments also. That is how God the Father will show mercy to the thousands. It is through Jesus Christ!

Does this chapter teach anything about yet-future events?

  • Just as the Children of Israel heard the voice of God and lived, so will all who love Him when faith becomes sight and each person sees Him face to face.

Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.
