Journal Through the Bible: Week 35 Saturday

source
Judges chapter 16

I'm not sure Samson had a way with women but they sure had a way with him.

Does God issue any commands?

  • God had previously made commands concerning the Nazarite vows and had commanded that Samson be a Nazarite throughout his life. Samson broke the vows when he told Delilah of God's command not to cut his hair which resulted in having his head shaved.

Does God make any promises?

  • The Philistines attributed their success over Samson as being the work of their god, Dagon. God will not share His glory with things that are not real. God had promised the Israelites that they would have success over the Canaanites and this happened even at the time of Samson's death.

Does this chapter teach anything about Jesus?

  • Hebrews chapter 11 lists Samson's name within the hall of faith. It was faith in the promises of God that allowed him to do the work of God at the very end of his life when the burden was the hardest to bear. Jesus also did the work of God at the end of His own life even when the burden of sin was the hardest to bear.

Does this chapter teach anything about yet-future events?

  • Not that I identified.

Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.
