Journal Through the Bible: Week 30 Friday

Deuteronomy 32:48-33:29

The last thing Moses did before ascending Mount Nebo to see the Promised Land before he died was to bless the people.

The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them. Israel then shall dwell in safety alone; the fountain of Jacob shall be upon a land of corn and wine; also his heavens shall drop down dew. Happy art thous, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy excellency! And thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and thou shalt tread upon their high places. Deuteronomy 33:27-29

Does God issue any commands in this passage?

  • God commanded Moses to climb Mount Nebo so that he could view the land of Canaan before his death.

Does God make any promises?

  • God promised that Moses could view the land of Canaan and that the Children of Israel would possess that land.
  • Within the last words of Moses are blessings upon the tribes that are prophetic and are the promises of God.

Does this passage teach anything about Jesus?

  • (33:26) "There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun, . . ." Jeshurun means "upright one" or "righteous one" and is another name for Israel (which means "God contends.") Jesus was the Upright One who made Israel, originally Jacob the supplanter, upright also.

Does this passage teach anything about yet-future events?

  • The promised blessings are eternal. Israel will one day dwell completely in safety alone after all of his enemies have been thrust out.
