Journal Through The Bible: Week 1, Wednesday

Genesis 3:14-4:24

Does God make any promises in this passage? If so do they apply to me?
Yes! God specifically promises Eve in Genesis 3:15 that there would be war between Satan (the serpent) and his offspring and the woman and hers. The promise is that the seed of the woman will win, although not without suffering injury. This is the first reference to the coming of the savior, Jesus, who would be born of a virgin.
There are also promises made to Adam in Eve in the form of curses: 1. the ground; 2. childbearing; 3. the body dying and returning to the dust.
All of these promises apply to me in one form or another.  The Child born that was the descendant of Eve was not just her Savior but mine also. The curses that God placed upon the earth and the people in it definitely apply to me!

Are there references to Jesus in this passage?
Yes, since He is the Child that bruised the head of the serpent (Satan) while having His own heel bruised. (The prophet Isaiah said it so eloquently in chapter 53!)

Are there references to future events (in the future for us, that is) in this passage?
Once again we see in the beginning of God's letter to us a reference to the Tree of Life (3:24) and why it was kept from Adam (so he wouldn't live forever in his sinful unregenerate condition).  We see at the end of God's letter to us (Rev. 22:2) that the Tree of Life is accessible to all the redeemed (including Adam) in the New Jerusalem.
Does God make any commands in this passage? If so, to whom? And are they commands that I also must obey?
God told Cain to give his offering in an acceptable manner. When Cain later murdered his brother, Abel, God commanded him to be banished from his family (most likely his parents and any other siblings) and become a wanderer upon the earth.
Likewise, I am also commanded to offer myself as a living sacrifice which will be acceptable to God (Romans 12:1).
