Journal Through the Bible: Week 10 Monday

A branch of my family tree dating back about 400 years

Genesis 36:1-43
This chapter is parenthetically inserted into the narrative about Jacob's family. It is the genealogy of Esau's descendants. I didn't take the time to plot this family tree (although I was tempted to do so) but it can be seen that Moses, who was the great-grandson of Jacob (Jacob -> Levi -> Jochabed -> Moses) knew a great deal about his great-granduncle's family. He even related an event in verse 24 that must have been well-known to his first readers, perhaps as a legendary tale told throughout their extended family.

There is also a man named Uz mentioned that could possibly have been an ancestor of Job but most probably was not. Job's ancestor was likely the Uz of Genesis 10.

Did God make any promises in this chapter?
No, but the genealogy itself is a promise fulfilled! God promised Rebekah that she carried two the beginnings of two nations in her womb (see Genesis 25:23). Jacob was the head of the Children of Israel and Esau was the head of the nation of Edom.

Are there any references to Jesus?
 No.

Are there any references to End Time events or eternity?
No, only historical records given, not future prophecies.

Does God issue any commands?
No, God does not speak.

Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.
